Disney-obsessed girl who grew up idolizing Princess Ariel has achieved her dream – a career that is real life MERMAID.
Redhead Melanie Long grew up with her bedroom walls are decorated with pictures of princess, telling everyone who will listen that one day she would be the Little Mermaid.
Now the 25-year-old swam her way to success.
Five years ago she moved to Phuket in Thailand from her family home in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire, to work as a dive instructor.
She put her in touch with the Thai children’s charity is looking for models to dress as a mermaid in a gala ball – she grabbed the opportunity with both hands. She made her own costume mermaid from scratch, working on my breathing technique and now makes a living doing a job of her dreams.
She said: “When I was a child, when people asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always say, the Little Mermaid.
“As a ginger kid you open to ridicule and a single hero or princess that we, the people, Ginger had to look to Ariel.
“It’s not something that I ever actively pursued, because I never thought that it would be impossible.
“So I have to dive to think that will be the closest I can get to become a mermaid.”
The handmade four feet swimmable long tail will allow it to strengthen the illusion of real life mermaid whipping its tail underwater.
Since then, she was in great demand in Thailand for appearances on television, in movies and music videos, as well as children’s parties and weddings.
Now swimmer puts her mermaid job on hold to become a student. She returned to Scotland to study marine science and conditional offers from the University of Glasgow, University of Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Napier University of the Highlands and Islands all on the table for the fall. She said that she worked diver opened her eyes to the importance of environmental protection of the ocean environment.
