Pichai, 43, a native of Chennai who went to IIT Kharagpur and later at Stanford and Wharton, will take charge of a Google. Larry Page said he will be stripped of companies “that are quite far away our main products of Internet” which will all go into Alphabet. Page will be CEO of Alphabet.
The new parent company will include, in addition to Google, units like Calico (focusing on longevity), X Lab (incubating new efforts like Wing, Google’s drone delivery effort) and units that deal with life sciences (such as working in the smart contact lenses that detects the level of blood sugar). Google’s investment arm, Ventures and Capital, will also be part of Alphabet.
Sundar Pichai joined Google on 2004 and has worked on, including the Google Chrome browser and Android mobile operating system.
Pichai oversee the largest company under that umbrella, that Google will still call and continue to include some of the most popular Google products, including search engine, adds, maps, apps, YouTube and Android system.
Alphabet will be run by Google chief Larry Page, who showered praise upon Pichai, the current senior vice president of products.
