Giraffe is one of the most recognizable and loved Kenyan animals. This majestic tall blond roams the savanna with extra-long neck and graceful gait. The male giraffe is called a bull, female is called cows and child is called calf. Group of giraffes is called a herd. Giraffa camelopardalis is the scientific name of giraffe, because the Romans believed that because of its patches and height, it was a leopard and camel hybrid.
3 giraffe species occur in Kenya. They are the most common Masai giraffe, striking reticulated giraffe, which is located in the northern part of Kenya, and poses a serious threat to the Rothschild giraffe. About 46,000 of the 150,000 giraffes in the world live in Kenya. Since the habitat is almost a third of the world’s population of giraffe, Kenya is home to the largest giraffe population in the world.
The giraffe is the tallest land mammal and can reach a height of 18 feet. This is more than the 3 people standing on top of each other in average. Male giraffe can weigh up to 2600 kg and a female giraffe more that 1,800 kilograms. Therefore, the male giraffe weighs more than 10 people together.
