E-commerce major Flipkart is offering an allowance of Rs 50,000 to its employees who want to adopt a child.
On Monday, the company, which is valued at $15 billion, announced an Adoption Assistance Program that addresses the issue of biological parents is giving more time with their newborn children for parents who adopt.
Under the new policy, the mothers who adopt children under 12 months of age are entitled to the same maternity benefits as others and six months of paid leave and four months of flexible working hours. This is in addition to Rs 50,000 compensation for legal expenses.
“We want to make Flipkart a great workplace for employees, especially when they go through large life events,” said Mekin Maheshwari, chief people officer at the company. He added that this would help them attract talent at a time when the war for talent is intense.
Parents can use the six weeks of paid vacation under this program, the company said in a statement.
Flipkart has 33,000 employees and Maheshwari said policies are driving a step towards equal opportunities and gender diversity.
Monday’s announcement puts Flipkart ahead of companies that have been around for a long time, say human resources (HR) consultants.
