Canoeing is a sport of propelling an open canoes, using a paddle. Canoeing was originally a form of long-distance transportation in North America, the Amazon Basin and Polynesia, as well as in many other countries.

Scottish explorer John MacGregor, experienced canoeing in Canada and the United States in 1858, began to build their own canoes on his return to the UK.
