Beaver is mainly a nocturnal and semi-aquatic rodent. It belongs to the genus Castor and is currently represented by two species, known as the North American and Eurasian beaver. They are known for building dams, canals and lodges. They are the second-largest rodent known worldwide. They live in colonies, and make the dam, which is deeply in the water and protect them from predators.
North American beaver population declined rapidly due to excessive hunting. They are killed for their fur, and glands which are used as a source of medicine and perfumes. They are known for their natural trait of creating dams in basins in which they live. They have very sharp and powerful front teeth used for cutting trees to build their homes. They are known for their anxieties.
Beaver dives quickly and slaps the water with a broad tail when frightened. This sound can be heard by a large distance above and below water. This behaviour acts as a warning to other beaver which is present in the water. They slowly walk on land, but are effective swimmers and can stay under water for about 15 minutes.
