Barcelona Court handed Argentine footballer Lionel Messi and his father, 21-month sentence for tax evasion, according to a statement from the court. However, they are unlikely to actually go to jail.
Messi and his father Jorge Horacio Messi are accused of covering up €4.1 million tax in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
In accordance with Spanish law, if a suspect was sentenced to less than two years, they can serve as a probationary period. This means that Messi and his father, probably would not be in prison.
The court ordered the Argentine soccer star to pay around €2 million and his father to fork out €1.5 million.
Messis can appeal their sentences to the Supreme Court of Spain.
